One of the most common reasons a notarization gets delayed is improper identification. To protect you and ensure your document is legally valid, Maryland requires specific forms of ID for all notarial acts.
Below is a simple breakdown to help you prepare for your appointment.
✅ Acceptable Forms of ID
Your ID must be current or issued within the last 5 years, contain a photo, and include your name, signature, and physical description.
The following are accepted:
Maryland driver’s license
Out-of-state driver’s license
State-issued identification card
U.S. Passport
U.S. Military ID
Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
Foreign passports (must be stamped by USCIS)
Tribal-issued ID cards
These IDs meet Maryland’s requirements for identification during a notarization.
❌ Unacceptable Forms of ID
These may be valid for other uses, but cannot be used for notarization:
Social Security cards
Birth certificates
Expired driver’s licenses beyond 5 years
School IDs
Work badges
Costco/Sam’s Club/Store membership cards
Debit or credit cards
Temporary paper IDs (unless authenticated and still within valid issuance rules)
If your ID falls into one of these categories, it won’t be accepted for notarization under Maryland law.
💡 What If You Don’t Have Acceptable ID?
You may still be able to complete notarization using a method called credible witnesses. This requires:
1 or 2 impartial adults
Each with valid acceptable ID
Who can swear to your identity
Not all documents allow this method, so always ask beforehand.
